Apply for the Lawyer-linguists competition (AD7)

As a lawyer-linguist at the Court of Justice of the European Union, you must be able to translate often complex legal texts (judgments of the Court of Justice and the General Court, Opinions of the Advocates General, written pleadings of the parties, etc.) into the language of the competition from at least two other official EU languages (one of which, for this competition, must be French). You must be able to review such translations and provide legal analysis in cooperation with the Registries and the other departments of the Court of Justice of the EU. The work of a lawyer-linguist involves the use of standard IT and other office-technology tools.

To apply for the Lawyer-linguists competition (AD7), you must meet the following requirements:

• Be an EU national and enjoy the full rights of an EU citizen.
   

• Have knowledge of at least three official EU languages, as indicated in the table below. 

  For ease of reference, the required languages will be referred to as ‘language 1’, language 2’, and ‘language 3’.
   

• You must also have completed university studies in law. Specific conditions apply to each competition. You can find detailed information on the required educational qualifications in the Notice of Competition, which can be found on the application page by clicking the “Get started” button below.
• In principle, no professional experience is required. However, in cases where a candidate’s required educational qualifications correspond to completed university studies of 3 years only, they should also have subsequently obtained relevant professional experience of at least one year.

The selection process for the Lawyer-linguists competition (AD7) includes online reasoning tests (verbal, numerical and abstract reasoning), an EU law test, a translation test and a translation review test. All tests will very likely take place on the same day. 

The languages will be used in different phases of the competitions as indicated below.

Candidates who succeed in the selection process are placed on a reserve list.

Once on a reserve list, successful candidates may be contacted by the recruiting services of the EU institutions and bodies interested in their profile, or they may apply proactively to published vacancies. If shortlisted, they may be invited for targeted recruitment interviews. Such interviews, and any other related procedures, are outside the selection process conducted by EPSO.
